- Ageing Workforce
The demographic ageing of the working population is a serious concern to public sector employers in the UK and in the rest of Europe. It has a significant impact on future workforce availability, the affordability of occupational pensions, as well as on the services provided by the public sector. The year 2006 will see the transposition of European anti-age discrimination legislation in the UK, which all employers need to be prepared for.
The challenge of active ageing is one of issues to be addressed in the joint social partner work programme, with a seminar aimed at exchanging information due to take place in 2005. CEEP UK has been concerned with this topic for a number of years and was instrumental in launching a questionnaire among CEEP members and organising a seminar showcasing the good practices in the management of active ageing in different Member States.
Background information and proceedings from the CEEP seminar held on 1 and 2 March 2004 in London are available to download (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD).
As a result of the seminar, CEEP UK submitted an application for funding to the European Commission under social dialogue budget line 04.03.03.01 to continue its work on this issue with some action research in a number of public sector organisations, due to culminate in the preparation of a good practice guide on age management policies. Funding for this project was granted and the project launched in January 2005.
